You will be joint with the interior architecture students for one year learning model making, hand drawing and basic cad towards the end of the year.
Term 1:The first term consists of three different bi-projects.
Project A-Studying, measuring and drawing a site with historical value.
Project B-Designing modeling and making a 'drawing machine';a device that measures a quality of the site making drawings to reflect its findings.
Project C- Designing a small sized underground burrow for a specific client, in the site that was studied in project A.
Term 2: There is only one major project in term two which involves designing and modeling a bigger scale accommodation building for the specific scientist who was assigned to everyone as a client in the first term. In this project, the individual needs of the client as well as the physical, cultural and historical context of the site have to be considered.
Communications: This module gets the students familiarized with design programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and AutoCAD.
Year 3: There are 3 major design projects this year plus a thesis /dissertation approx (6000 words) on a topic you would like to write about.(I suggest you write about something you genuinely enjoy - it makes the process a lot easier and better when you have to juggle a few modules in the first term. Plus there is a Creative Practise /business module where you learn about the structure of an architectural firm as well as rules and regulations. (Pay attention to these, they are important!) Also, previous modules such as technology and communications are integrated this year.
This can range from a variety of topics within the realm of spatial relationships and architectural design. The topic can be quite broad and you will work on this throughout the first term and hand in when you go back.
Project A - A small scale intervention where you produce cad intensive drawings focussing on detail (scale 1:5).
Project B- The housing project. You learn about housing “prototypes” create a set of units learn about basic master plans and you are required to create a detailed model of your proposal.
Project A+B is worth 30 credits.
Term 2 : FMP Final major project. You create a cultural large scale building in a site abroad. Draw upon site specific context and cultural to create a unique proposal. This project is worth 60 credits(half of third year)
👐🏻 General approach
I think there is a good balance between creative and technology. The university prides itself for teaching how to think and it does that well. I think they are clear on when to produce physical models and drawings and technological drawings.
💖 Student support
Summer of second year and after there is an opportunity for students to join a rural space project in Lithuania ranch space led by the stage two convenor Kristina Kotov. You create a design project for a week. This year it was mainly virtual.
For bachelors first year I did not feel supported, I was doing architecture and learning environment was difficult for many. I then transferred to interior architecture and design for second and third year and this helped a lot. The 1.1 sessions were amazing and my tutors were really supportive.
📄 Application Process
I first had a portfolio submissions and then once selected, i went for an interview with my art portfolio
😉 Insider Tips
Instead of getting drinks from the university cafe, we usually get it from the vending machines which is much cheaper. Many bring food from home as it’s expensive.
